The 427 SOHC...
Factory rated at 615 h.p. and developed to stomp the chrysler hemi on the roundy round track. Race teams quickly found out that a 7ft long timing chain didnt work so well on a 500 mile race at high rpms.
So.. the drag racers got a hold of them and they started working their way into rails and funny cars in the late 60's. Pushing 8500 rpms netted the same result with the timing retarding almost 30 degrees, so they converted them to gear drive.
...and you though timing your quad cam sporty motor was a pain in the ass....
